The GroveHain, a sentient plant creature, defies instinct and genetic imperative by holding herself separate from the planet-encompassing vegetative super-intelligence known as the Mother. Hain wants to explore the stars but when she finally encounters aliens, her destiny is forever changed.
The Grove is available on Amazon for $0.99. This novelette was previously published in the anthology: The Alien Chronicles. It is longer than a short story, but shorter than a novella. Cover artwork created by: Tom Edwards (I recorded an audio version of The Grove myself, available on iTunes, Amazon, and Audible.) Praise for The GroveThe Grove is Jennifer Foehner Wells first published work since her breakout hit Fluency. Just like with Fluency, Wells paints a vivid picture that leaves no doubt that she knows these aliens worlds all too well. She has been there and so specifically describes the creatures and worlds that you can sense an innate familiarity with them.
With The Grove, we meet Hain, an alien being who also is part-plant. The story is told from her point of view, and the beings she comes into contact with are more humanoid, but are clearly horrific and alien to Hain. By the end, I had a sympathy for her and was rooting (see what I did there?) for her to succeed. If this is any indication of what Wells will do as a follow-up to Fluency, count me in. --from an Amazon review left by author, Will Swardstrom |
